Employment History, Education & Qualifications, Other Information
The main elements of my job responsibilities within the Research & Development groups of Johnson & Johnson and Scholl have consisted essentially of project management and team leadership geared towards developing and launching new products to tight deadlines and fixed budgets, providing technical support to the marketing divisions and their customer service departments throughout Europe and close liaison with manufacturing operations in the UK.
With both companies a high level of project planning was required necessitating co-ordination of Research & Development resources with those from different departments within the company, e.g. engineering, production, purchasing, marketing and outside organisations such as suppliers and external service providers.
Scholl Consumer Products Ltd. (1983 - 1997)
I joined Scholl Research and Development in 1983 as Technical Manager and had responsibility for a team of graduates and technicians up until May 1997 when I left the company as a result of major changes in senior management and re-organisation within the division. More recently Scholl has merged with Seton Healthcare and London International Group to become SSL International.
Latterly as Development Manager since 1989, I had five graduates with three technicians reporting to me. The range of expertise within the department was quite broad, covering materials technology (latex foams for insoles), pressure sensitive self-adhesive products, medical devices (gait and foot correction appliances), toiletries and cosmetics (creams, lotions, bathing products and sprays), OTC Medicines (Athlete's Foot Remedies, Antiseptic Foot Creams and Corn Removing Products), hosiery technology (therapeutic stockings and tights), analytical chemistry and until the end of 1996 herbal medicines (Gerard House Ltd. was a subsidiary of Scholl).
Because of Scholl’s area of business I am quite familiar with the requirements of the EU Cosmetics Directive, the Medical Devices Directive and in providing technical data to support product licence applications to the MCA and other regulatory bodies.
During my time with Scholl the R&D team was responsible for the launch of a variety of new products and for providing technical support to the manufacturing operations division and to the individual markets throughout Europe and South East Asia.
Much more specific information is available on request.
Johnson & Johnson Ltd. (1973 - 1983)
As manager of the Adhesives and Wound Care Laboratory at Cosham, Portsmouth, I was responsible for a total staff of nine graduates and technicians. During this time our laboratory succeeded in developing and launching a new antiseptic hospital dressing, a range of surgical spool tapes, a new adhesive fabric first-aid dressing and introducing a completely new emulsion acrylic adhesive system.
As a bench scientist, I developed amongst other things an improved Band-Aid first-aid dressing which was launched in the UK and the main export markets.
In 1980 I was invited to give a series of presentations at J & J's International Adhesives Conference in New Jersey USA on UK developments.
Ph.D., Wolverhampton Polytechnic (Sponsored by Koch-Light Laboratories Ltd.) (1970 - 1973)
Succeeded in obtaining one British Patent and publication of three papers. Koch-Light launched a range of GPC materials developed by me under the trade name Enzacryl Gel.
